The county seat, Pekin is the largest city in Tazewell County. The homes of Pekin reflect its diversity. They range from turn-of-the-century Victorian mansions to cozy bungalows, from splendidly designed homes overlooking lakes and golf courses to luxury townhomes and apartments. Newer areas of Pekin are spotted by parks, lakes, and golf courses and builders have used these amenities well, creating beautiful homes of varying sizes that look out on green landscapes, shorelines, and fairways.
The initiation of the Marigold Festival in 1972 was for the purpose of honoring the late Senator Everett Dirksen. One of Senator Dirksen's fondest wishes was for the Marigold to be adopted as the national flower. Through the Senator's efforts and encouragement of others in the community to grow the flower he has helped make Pekin "The Marigold Capital of the World."
The Pekin area is blessed with over 50 churches practicing many different faiths and beautiful yet diverse architecture. Pekin Area Ministerial Alliance gathers the local religious leaders together to strengthen the ties in the religious community. A community-wide ecumenical service is held on Thanksgiving and Good Friday, with the host church inviting all to worship together as one to renew their faith. The Pekin area also boasts several faith-based schools covering all grade levels from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
